Although there is no upper age limit for becoming an apprentice, could your business benefit from taking on a 'young' person?
If yes, now’s the time, as the Government are offering a £1,000 training incentive (see below).
Co-Investment
As an employer that doesn’t pay the apprenticeship levy you will only need to pay 5%
towards the cost of training and assessing an apprentice over the age of 22
and the government pays the rest up to the funding band maximum, for each apprenticeship.
For apprentices under 22 years of age the Government will fund
100%
of the training and assessing costs.
There is no upper age limit for those who can start an apprenticeship; they could be an existing member of staff looking to upskill or a new recruit!
If you employ fewer than 50 employees, the government will pay 100% of the apprenticeship training costs (up to the funding band maximum) for apprentices aged 16 to 22, or for apprentices aged 19 to 24 with an Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP) provided by their local authority, or who have been in the care of their local authority.

Receive Additional Government Incentives!
You will also receive an incentive payment from the government of £1,000 for recruiting 'young' eligible apprentices who are:
- aged 16 to 18 years old.
- aged 19 to 24 with an Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP) provided by their local authority, or who have been in the care of their local authority.
Obtaining Funding for an Apprenticeship through Levy Transfer
The apprenticeship levy is paid by large employers with an annual pay bill of over £3 million (they pay 0.5% of their total annual pay bill). Levy paying employers who do not spend all of their levy can transfer up to 50% of their unspent levy funds to SMEs. You can apply to receive pledged unspent levy funds and if successful you can use this to fund your 5% contribution to apprenticeship training costs.
